Setting Up Google Webmaster Tools in WordPress

Google Webmaster Tools is a free service offered by Google that allows you to check the indexing status and optimize the visibility of your sites. Additionally, you can use Google Webmaster Tools to access the latest data regarding incoming links and internal links, and you can view statistics about how Google indexes your site, and if it found any errors while doing it.

You need to upgrade your Flash Player to version 8 or newer.

  1. THANK YOU! I love your “Tip of the Day”, and I’m having trouble performing today’s setting up Google Webmaster Tools. I hope you can help me. I’ve done everything up to “verify”, and each attempt fails. Don’t I have to enter the meta content into my website before Google can verify? If so, how do I do that on my WordPress blog http://MagnoliaJazz.com? Thanks in advance for your help.

YES – you do have to enter the meta content before Google can verify your site.

Once you’ve setup your webmaster tools account and installed (and activated) the plugin mentioned in the video, on the settings page for the plugin, you’ll need to enter the verification code as follows…

If your meta tag looks like this:

    meta name="google-site-verification" content="IOHY2qNGo4YsSCpucMz52y_-322cxik-j6-eb6bEJxY"

… then the part you need to copy & paste into the settings page for the Google Webmaster Tools plugin would be everything inside of the quotation marks after content=

Great stuff, Ben. I was wondering, however what the difference was between having Google Analytics and Google Webmaster tools? Are they mutually exclusive or do they have similar functions.

This plugin also allows you to easily verify your site with Google Webmaster Tools, Yahoo! Site Explore, and Bing Webmaster Tools:

  5. OMG… I can’t tell you how happy I am right now! I spent 2 hours trying to find the right video to get this working (with google search wrong info), and of course I found exactly what I was looking for here! Thanks for much for this Ben!

  6. Rachelle,

Each and every day I continue to work with my team, we continually expand upon ways we CAN help others understand the importance of taking complete control of their own online presence. The more we learn HOW to OWN this power… the more empowered we are to control our own success. Understanding the day-to-day operations of your website is no different than running your offline brick and mortar business. If you have the power to put the key in the door… then you have the power to open the doors to a world of great opportunity.
